Český Krumlov “UNESCO“

The Gold Hotel is found in the romantic environment of the municipal park, on the left bank of the Vltava River, in the immediate vicinity of the historical centre of Český Krumlov. The town of Český Krumlov, which often called “the Pearl of South Bohemia” ranks among the historical jewels of both the Czech Republic and Europe, and currently is, thanks to its history and unique atmosphere, one of the Czech Republic’s most frequently visited places. Since the mid 1960s, a lot of attention has been given to the preservation of its historical values. In 1992, the efforts for preserving its original appearance were rewarded by putting Český Krumlov on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

This historical town situated in the picturesque valley of the meandering Vltava River was founded by the family of Vítek (the Witigons) around the year 1274. However, the first records about Český Krumlov date from 1253. The Latin name of the settlement was Chrumbenove, alter Castrum Crummau. The name itself is probably derived from old German: Krumben Ouwe, which was an expression for a crooked flood plain or meadow. The main landmarks of Český Krumlov consist of majestic buildings - the gothic Church of St. Vitus and the castle and chateau of Český Krumlov - a complex that ranks among the largest in Central Europe as it is composed of over 40 historical buildings. Both the castle and the coat-of-arms bearing the five-petalled rose, belonging to the Witigons, came into the hands of the Rožmberks, whose name is linked with the greatest bloom of the chateau and the development and prosperity of the town.

The Old Town with its winding lanes and ancient houses of Gothic and Renaissance origin, housing galleries, museums, shops and taverns attracts the attention of all visitors. The town centre consists of the rectangular náměstí Svornosti Square with the town hall, a plague column and the fountain. In the vicinity of Český Krumlov you can visit the Monastery of Zlatá Koruna, which was founded in 1263 by King Přemysl Otakar II, or the Monastery of Vyšší Brod, which is one of the largest and, in terms of art treasures, the most valuable monastery complexes in this country. Another interesting place is the town of Rožmberk nad Vltavou, with its Romantic-Gothic castle built by the famous Lords of Rožmberk.
The untouched countryside in the surroundings of Český Krumlov invites to a number of sports activities, such as hiking, rafting, horse riding, angling and cycling, and skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding in winter. You can choose from a large number of sports facilities right in the town. The town has a roofed swimming-pool, winter stadium, several fitness centres, and there are also good conditions for golf, tennis, squash, basketball, volleyball, bowling, ninepins and other sports.

Culture-loving visitors are attracted to Český Krumlov by a large number of exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances and other popular cultural events: for instance the well-known Festival of the Five-Petalled Rose or the Chamber Music Festival with a tradition of long years.

Český Krumlov is a town of unique beauty, and the charm and mystery of the town remains deep in the souls of its visitors, who like to come back here again.

We are looking forward to you.
